L'Italie suspend temporairement les règles de l'espace Schengen vis à vis de l'Espagne
Italy has temporarily closed the Schengen Area to Spain, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Friday, calling the measure "inevitable".
"The temporary suspension of Schengen with Spain is a necessary decision to protect the security of our citizens and defend the borders of Europe. It is a measure provided for by the treaties and which has now become inevitable," he wrote on X.
Contacted by AFP, the Italian Interior Ministry confirmed that Italy has closed its sea and air entry points to Spain, while specifying that this would not have an impact on travel by Spanish and European citizens to Italy.
Border controls at air and sea borders with Spain will be "targeted" and will only concern non-European nationals arriving from Spain, the ministry said.
The measure is to remain in effect for one month from Saturday, he added.
An Italian spokesman also indicated that, following discussions with France, the two countries would strengthen existing land border controls.
On Thursday, Italy's far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for Spain's suspension from the Schengen Area, describing images showing thousands of migrants arriving in Ceuta as "shocking".
According to Antonio Tajani, the migration crisis in Ceuta is the result of a "shared responsibility", and EU countries must "work together to prevent uncontrolled flows of migrants from entering EU territory".
