Poland: Emergency meeting after "possible assassination attempts" against the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister

The Polish Interior Ministry announced on Sunday a meeting of authorities at the Anti-Terrorism Centre of the Internal Security Agency (ABW), after police received information about possible assassination attempts targeting the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister.

"A report concerning a possible assassination attempt targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, has been passed on to the police through the State Protection Service (SOP)," said Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka at a press briefing.

"The Minister of the Interior (…) and the Minister coordinating the special services (…) have ordered the launch of measures" on this subject, she also wrote on X.

She specified that officials from the police, the State Protection Service and the Homeland Security Agency were participating in the meeting on Sunday.

"We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness," Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for the Minister-Coordinator of Special Services, later told reporters.

"Month after month, year after year, more and more threats and disturbing messages of all kinds are reaching the police, the SOP, and other services concerning Poland and Poles," he stated. "In this case, we are talking about a high probability that these threats could actually be carried out," he added.

Poland, a NATO and EU member country located on the eastern flank of both blocs, is on high alert after several knife attacks or attempted attacks involving minors or young adults in schools and high schools since the start of the school year in September.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Thursday denounced a "cult of violence that is omnipresent in the world" and that "has reached Poland".
