Donald Trump asserted on Thursday that the United States maintained "huge" stockpiles of weapons, railing against press reports that a shortage had prompted him to abandon new strikes against Iran in recent days.

"The United States has enormous quantities of ammunition (...) In addition, large quantities are manufactured and shipped to the United States as needed," the American president wrote on his Truth Social network.

Denouncing the claims as "treacherous," he added in a threatening tone that those responsible for them "are being hunted down" for prosecution. "Long prison sentences will be sought," he wrote.

Several media outlets, particularly CNN and the Washington Post, have reported in recent days on shortages of long-range guided missiles and anti-aircraft defense interceptors affecting Donald Trump's strategy towards Iran.

According to CNN, the US military has "depleted nearly 80%" of its stock of interceptors for its THAAD defense system.

The Washington Post claims that Donald Trump "exploded with frustration" last week over shortages and "demanded explanations" from his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth "as to why he had apparently been misled."

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt and her Pentagon counterpart Sean Parnell denounced it as "fake news" on Wednesday evening.

According to the Washington Post, the shortages partly contributed to the U.S. president's about-face on Saturday, who had written to "suspend all attacks" at Tehran's request, while the United States was "ready to strike (...) at levels not seen since World War II."
