A customer forgets his wallet at Auchan; a cashier takes the money before being caught on camera.

The incident occurred in an Auchan supermarket in Zaragoza, Spain. The cashier was fired after 19 years of service, according to L'Indépendant and Le HuffPost. The case, which took place on July 3, 2024, was finally resolved before the High Court of Justice of Aragon.

That day, a customer left his wallet at the checkout of an Auchan supermarket (“Alcampo”, in Zaragoza, Spain). Busy, the cashier temporarily put it in a drawer. A few minutes later, at the end of her shift, she closed her register and discreetly retrieved the wallet, out of sight of others. She took the 195 euros inside and placed it next to the payment terminal where the distracted customer had left it. She reported the lost item to her supervisor. He checked: it contained only documents, according to the Spanish edition of HuffPost.

That afternoon, the wallet was returned to the customer, who filed a complaint a few days later regarding the disappearance of the €195. The police requested access to the supermarket's CCTV footage, which was damning and ultimately implicated the employee. On July 8, she claimed to have found €195 under her till, but investigators didn't believe her and accused her of staging the incident. On July 31, she was dismissed with immediate effect for gross misconduct.

Despite the defendant's appeals to the Spanish courts, Auchan prevailed, "in the first instance as well as on appeal," L'Indépendant reports, and the cashier was dismissed without compensation despite her 19 years of service.
