Une femme enceinte se suicide après que son mari a exigé un test ADN pour l’enfant à naître
A 23-year-old pregnant Indian woman reportedly committed suicide after being humiliated by her husband, who allegedly demanded a DNA test for their unborn child.
The incident led to the arrest of the man and his mother in Hyderabad on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The victim, G Sushmita, was found hanged at her home in the village of Gadipeddapur, in the mandal of Alladurg, Medak district, on the evening of June 25.
“We have arrested her husband, G Abhilash, and her mother, Laxmi. They have been brought before the magistrate and placed in pretrial detention,” said Sub-Inspector D Shankar of Alladurg.
The victim, Sushmita, was five months pregnant at the time of her death.
In a complaint filed with the police, her mother, G Janabai, claimed that her daughter had been subjected to constant physical and mental harassment by her husband, with the demand for a DNA test exacerbating her distress.
Originally from the village of Mothkupally, in the Vikarabad district, Sushmita had been married for about 18 months to Abhilash, a bracelet seller from Gadipeddapur.
“On June 23, my husband and I went to Sushmita’s house to discuss preparations for the baby shower. There, Abhilash had an altercation about the ceremony and demanded a DNA test for the unborn child. Elderly members of the community then intervened and we went home,” Janabai said in his complaint.
According to the complaint, this request, made in the presence of both families, caused deep humiliation and emotional trauma to Sushmita.
Members of his family have stated that the suspicions against him have profoundly affected his mental state.
Two days later, on the evening of June 25, Sushmita committed suicide at her home.
The villagers informed his parents of the incident.
Janabai also claimed that the continued harassment from her husband and mother-in-law drove her daughter to commit the irreparable.
According to the complaint, Alladurg police registered a case on June 26 under Articles 85 (husband or relative subjecting a wife to cruelty) and 108 (incitement to suicide), read with Article 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
After the autopsy, the body was handed over to Sushmita's parents.
