Venezuela : le bilan du double séisme frôle les 4.500 morts
The death toll from the double earthquake in Venezuela on June 24 has been revised upwards and is now approaching 4,500, according to official figures released on Sunday.
The Venezuelan government now reports 4,490 deaths and still 16,740 injuries.
The previous death toll, dated Saturday, was 4,333.
The authorities have not mentioned the number of missing persons, which the UN estimated at around 50,000 two days after the tragedy.
With magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, the two earthquakes occurred 39 seconds apart and mainly affected the capital Caracas and the neighboring state of La Guaira, where makeshift camps house refugees in stadiums, public squares and on sidewalks.
More than 19,000 disaster victims are living in these camps, according to the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez.
Venezuelan and foreign rescue workers continue to try to extract bodies buried under the rubble. According to the government, more than 850 buildings have been affected and 190 have completely collapsed.
International aid continues to arrive in Venezuela: a shipment from Russia with food and supplies for the victims arrived on Sunday, Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said on his Telegram account.
The US embassy in Caracas, for its part, announced that it had delivered 100,000 assistance kits to the disaster areas.
