Venezuela: The official death toll from the double earthquake climbs to over 6,000

Venezuela: le bilan officiel du double séisme grimpe à plus de 6.000 morts

The death toll from the double earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24 has now risen to 6,125, according to the official toll released Monday by the president of Parliament, Jorge Rodriguez.

The latest official figures reported 5,546 deaths.

Several weeks after the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck the Venezuelan coast, dozens of people are continuing the search to try to find their missing relatives in the state of La Guaira, north of Caracas, the hardest hit.

The state governor, José Alejandro Teran, told local media that nearly 1,400 people were still missing.

According to diplomatic sources and expert projections, the number of missing persons could be around 10,000.

For weeks, demolition and clearing work has been underway in La Guaira, where most of the victims and the greatest material damage are concentrated.

According to authorities, 190 buildings collapsed during the double earthquake and 856 others were affected.

In addition to the completely collapsed buildings, thousands of others are considered by the authorities to be too risky to be inhabited.

Nearly 24,000 disaster victims are now living in camps in Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira.

On Friday, the Venezuelan Parliament passed a law aimed at increasing the supply of rental housing to help the thousands of people who have lost their homes.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez said earlier Monday that the legislation, which ends regulations discouraging leasing, would allow for "win-win" relationships between property owners and those who wish to rent.

"We estimate that around 400,000 homes could be affected by this law," said the leader, who governs under pressure from the United States.

Ms. Rodriguez also announced that her government plans to deliver some 4,000 homes by the end of the year and will offer financing for the purchase of real estate to people affected by these earthquakes, the most devastating in the country's recent history.
