Xi affirme que la Chine et les Etats-Unis devraient être "partenaires plutôt que rivaux" (médias d'Etat)
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for cooperation with Washington, Beijing state media reported, hours after being welcomed Wednesday evening in the US capital by his counterpart Donald Trump.
"Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals," Xi said in a note published by the official Xinhua news agency, adding that "the Chinese and American people have long enjoyed friendly exchanges, and our interests are closely intertwined."
These statements come on the eve of highly anticipated talks between Chinese and American leaders, who shook hands upon Xi Jinping's arrival in Washington.
These discussions must address trade, technological competition – particularly in the field of artificial intelligence – and Beijing's support for Iran.
The Chinese President also said he was looking forward "to having in-depth discussions with President Trump on major issues concerning our bilateral relations and the global situation," reported Xinhua.
The two countries should "work together to promote a stable relationship with cooperation as the main pillar, competition within reasonable limits, manageable differences and peaceful prospects," Xi said.
In a nod to Donald Trump's favorite slogan, he added that "the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the goal of making America great again can perfectly go hand in hand."
"I believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, this visit will see fruitful results, improve the well-being of our two peoples and bring new hope for world peace," he added.
