The Dakar High Court delivered its verdict this Monday in the case of the spectacular theft of 100 million CFA francs at the Liberté 5 roundabout. According to the court report in L'Observateur, the main defendant, A. Sarr, a 22-year-old mechanical engineering student, was found guilty of theft and sentenced to two years in prison, with six months to be served. His three accomplices, S. Sall, SLS Mbodji, and ML Sy, the son of a magistrate, were sentenced to six months in prison, with one month to be served, for receiving stolen goods. They will also be jointly liable for paying 30 million CFA francs in damages to the victim, A. Ndiaye.

At the hearing on July 2nd, the student admitted to the facts, explaining that he had approached the owner out of admiration for his sports car. After being allowed to get in, he had deliberately left a door ajar in order to return and steal the bag. The defendant maintained, however, that he did not know "the exact amount of money in the bag."

In court, he explained that it was only when he went to buy a vehicle that he realized the size of the haul, telling the court: "It was when I saw the 10,000 FCFA that I understood it was bundles of ten million, but I never counted." To complete this 23.5 million FCFA transaction, the young mechanic had presented himself to the seller as an "Italian student on vacation" tasked with buying a car for his father.

The rest of the loot was quickly squandered on impulsive purchases and acts of generosity. A. Sarr bought himself two iPhone 13s worth 240,000 FCFA each, which he gave to friends, before distributing sums of 150,000 and 200,000 FCFA to some relatives, while keeping about 6 million at his home.

Among the beneficiaries was ML Sy. Prosecuted for receiving stolen goods, this son of a magistrate admitted during the proceedings to having lied to investigators by claiming that the funds came from his father, a maneuver intended to "try to protect his friends and stop the investigation", before the investigations dismantled his version.

L'Observateur reports that, of the 100 million initially stolen, the victim was able to recover 70.415 million. The court ultimately granted the plaintiff's request, awarding them the 30 million sought to cover the remaining losses and compensate for the damages suffered.
