« L’ivresse n’est pas une excuse » : le parquet requiert la perpétuité contre l’agresseur d’une lycéenne à Pikine-Guédiawaye
After six years of pre-trial detention, S. Diallo, a 38-year-old apprentice driver, appeared before the Criminal Chamber of Pikine-Guédiawaye on the second day of the Assizes, to answer for a particularly violent attack committed on a high school student.
The events date back to June 14, 2019, around 7:00 a.m., recounts L'Observateur, which attended the hearing. While walking to Limamou Laye High School, young M. Baldé was intercepted by S. Diallo. Armed with a knife, he snatched her phone. When the student resisted, the attack escalated: the accused struck her twice in the buttocks.
Lying in a pool of blood, the victim owes her life to the intervention of a courageous passerby who managed to subdue the assailant before handing him over to the security guards. Rescued by firefighters, she was rushed to Thiaroye Hospital. The medical certificate mentions a 2 cm wound and lasting psychological trauma.
"Intoxication is no excuse": a scathing indictment
In court, the accused adopted a strategy of "selective confession". While he admitted to the facts, he claimed to be completely drunk in an attempt to mitigate them: "I picked up the knife from the ground. I was drunk, I don't remember anything," he declared.
However, the portrait painted during the hearing was far more damning. His own mother had already described him during the investigation as a "notorious aggressor." A witness drove the point home, presenting him as a "regular" perpetrator of this type of attack, particularly targeting immigrants. For the prosecutor, whose closing argument was scathing, the facts were extremely serious and could have cost the victim her life. Reminding the court that intoxication is not a valid excuse under Senegalese law, he requested a life sentence.
"He has calmed down."
The defense, led by Mr. Faye, attempted to present a more nuanced picture, suggesting that Diallo had "mellowed" during his years of detention. They implored the court not to "socially ostracize" him, emphasizing his desire for rehabilitation. S. Diallo will learn his fate on June 12.
