The National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) has released its first seasonal forecast for the 2026 rainy season in Senegal. In its outlook report, the agency predicts a rainy season with a normal to late start across much of the country. This early start to the season will be accompanied by a real risk of false starts, while overall rainfall totals are expected to be below average.

According to ANACIM, the arrival of the rainy season could be hesitant in several areas of the country. Rural stakeholders are therefore advised to be particularly vigilant regarding the risks of early and unsustainable rainfall. These isolated downpours, often followed by long dry spells, pose challenges for farmers during the initial planting season.

For the period from May to July 2026, forecasts indicate a rainfall deficit across the entire country. This trend could negatively impact early agricultural activities in regions heavily reliant on early rains. For the following period, from June to August, expected rainfall totals are projected to remain below average to normal, with a concerning situation in central, southern, and northeastern Senegal.

Regarding the core of the rainy season, namely the period from July to September, ANACIM forecasts normal to below-average rainfall. Deficits could be more pronounced in the central and northern regions, while some localities in the south and east could experience rainfall levels close to the seasonal average.

These prospects serve as a warning sign for authorities, producers, and livestock farmers. ANACIM specifies that this bulletin will be regularly updated, particularly at the end of May, to refine the trends. In a country where rainfall remains the driving force of the rural economy, the 2026 rainy season is therefore shaping up to be one of caution and adaptation.
