Retour de Macky Sall : Seydi Gassama met en garde contre toute instrumentalisation de la justice
The debate surrounding the potential participation of former President Macky Sall in an upcoming election continues to generate strong reactions on the national political scene. Seydi Gassama, Executive Director of Amnesty International Senegal, has spoken out to warn against any attempt to manipulate the judicial system to politically exclude the former head of state.
In a recent statement, the human rights advocate argued that the opportunistic reopening or revival of legal cases solely to prevent Macky Sall from running for office constitutes an unacceptable abuse of power. He asserted that this is a practice the Senegalese people must no longer tolerate in a democracy governed by the rule of law.
“Releasing cases for the sole purpose of preventing Macky Sall from participating in an election would be an instrumentalization of justice for political ends; something that the Senegalese people must no longer accept,” warns Seydi Gassama.
However, the Amnesty International representative was careful to clarify that his approach was in no way an endorsement of impunity. On the contrary, he demanded a thorough investigation to shed light on the serious human rights violations recorded during the previous administration. According to him, if Macky Sall's personal responsibility were to be established at the conclusion of the investigations, legal proceedings should be initiated against him.
“An investigation must be carried out into the serious human rights violations of his regime and if his personal responsibility is established, then he must be prosecuted,” he concluded.
