In a press release published on September 7, 2026, the National Executive Secretariat (SEN) of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) issued a scathing indictment of the Pastef government's economic management. Faced with rising prices and the erosion of purchasing power, the party demanded accountability and announced its intention to appeal to regulatory authorities.
The deteriorating living standards of Senegalese households are now at the heart of the political battle. Following a meeting of its National Executive Secretariat, the APR expressed its concern about what it describes as "widespread and continuous inflation," plunging a large part of the population into increasing poverty.
Looking back on the first months of the Pastef-led regime, the former ruling party believes that the initial drop in food prices was based on a flawed diagnosis. According to the APR, three factors explain the price decrease:
An improvement in supply and production costs, an increase in public subsidies and a contraction in demand.
For the APR, this third factor is the most worrying one that has occurred in Senegal. The weakening of purchasing power has led households to drastically reduce their consumption, resulting in a mechanical drop in prices but weakening the national productive apparatus.
"A persistently depressed demand eventually weakens the productive apparatus, thereby reducing investment and weakening the country's supply capacity," analyzes the party's governing body.
The APR also points to a series of economic decisions deemed harmful over the past two years: layoffs in several sectors, the halting of major construction projects, the weakening of social protection and the maintenance of a heavy tax burden on businesses.
The opposition believes the government should have prioritized direct support for economic operators and local production rather than increasing the tax burden on an already weakened economic fabric.
Faced with this situation, the APR calls on the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as well as his former Prime Minister and current President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, to "fully assume their responsibilities".
The party also announced an institutional offensive. The APR plans to petition the Court of Auditors, the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), and regulatory authorities to obtain a detailed, transparent, and verifiable assessment of the country's socio-economic situation.
While reaffirming its position as a "republican and responsible opposition", the APR calls on the government to "move beyond rhetoric and provide concrete solutions to the daily emergencies of the Senegalese people".
