Diabète au Sénégal : Se soigner, un combat quotidien pour les patients, l’ASSAD plaide pour un meilleur accès aux soins
Accessing medication, monitoring blood sugar levels, and adhering to treatment regularly: for people living with diabetes, care doesn't end with diagnosis. Faced with the challenges related to healthcare and monitoring systems, the Senegalese Association for Diabetic Support (ASSAD) intends to strengthen its advocacy for better patient protection.
Living with diabetes requires constant vigilance. Beyond medical consultations, those affected must cope with the demands of long-term treatment, regular blood glucose monitoring, and access to the medications and equipment necessary for their care. This management raises issues of accessibility, continuity of care, and household financial capacity.
It is on these concerns that the Senegalese Association for the Support of Diabetics (ASSAD) intends to intensify its commitment. ASSAD aims to amplify the voices of patients and advocate with decision-makers for improved access to care, medication, and monitoring devices. Its work also focuses on strengthening information, awareness, and early detection.
In this fight, patient associations play a crucial role. Beyond raising awareness, they act as intermediaries between patients, healthcare professionals, and public authorities. They contribute to patient support, guidance, and the communication of their concerns to those responsible for their care.
ASSAD thus intends to integrate its actions into a broader mobilization, based on the complementary roles of health authorities, specialists, pharmacists, and patient organizations. This collaboration is essential to improving the support provided to people living with this chronic illness.
Ultimately, the challenge lies not only in detecting diabetes, but also in ensuring that those diagnosed have the means to receive care and continue their treatment over the long term. Early diagnosis loses some of its value when access to care and medication remains difficult.
