Diphtheria continues to be a concern for Senegalese health authorities. In its press release published on Monday, November 2, 2026, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene reported 456 confirmed cases since the start of the epidemic. A total of 60 health districts, spread across 13 regions of the country, are affected.

While no new deaths were recorded in the latest update, the cumulative toll remains high, with 14 people having lost their lives to this infectious and contagious disease. Analysis of the geographical distribution reveals that the disease is circulating in several parts of the country. Dakar has the highest number of cases with 61, followed by Kaolack (58), Thiès (51), Diourbel (48), Louga (47), Matam (42), Tambacounda (39), and Kédougou (37). Other affected regions include Kolda (22), Saint-Louis (16), Ziguinchor (14), Fatick (11), and Kaffrine (10).

In detail, several health districts are experiencing a significant number of infections. In Dakar, Guédiawaye has 11 cases, compared to 10 in Keur Massar and 9 in Dakar-Nord. In Kaolack, Ndoffane has 27 cases and Nioro du Rip has 23. In Louga, Darou Mousty has 26 cases. In the Diourbel region, Touba alone accounts for 36 cases. In Kédougou, the district of the same name has 27 cases.

In response to this situation, the Ministry reiterates that diphtheria is a preventable disease thanks to vaccination. Symptoms can include a sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and neck swelling. In some cases, grayish membranes appear in the throat and may be accompanied by breathing difficulties.

To limit the spread of the disease and protect children, health authorities urge parents to adhere to the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) vaccination schedule. They also recommend checking children's vaccination status and administering any missing doses.

The ministry also emphasizes the need to seek medical attention promptly at the nearest healthcare facility as soon as the first symptoms appear. It warns against any form of self-medication, which could delay treatment.

With 456 confirmed cases and 14 deaths, vigilance remains essential. In addition to epidemiological surveillance, adherence to the vaccination schedule and prompt treatment are crucial to slowing the spread of this disease.
