« C'était en réalité son cadeau d'adieu » : les confidences bouleversantes du père de Ndiassé Sall
In Italy, a young Senegalese couple, Ndiassé Sall and his wife Rouba Ndaw, perished in tragic circumstances, asphyxiated by carbon monoxide in their sleep. Four days after the tragedy, their 7-month-old daughter, who was fighting for her life in intensive care at the Maggiore Hospital in Parma, also succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. From Louga, Madiagne Sall, Ndiassé's father, rushed to Italy to face the unthinkable: the loss of his eldest son, his granddaughter, and his niece, Rouba Ndaw, who was also Ndiassé's first cousin.
In a poignant account reported by L'Observateur, Madiagne Sall recounts the circumstances of the tragedy and his last conversations with his son. According to his explanation, Ndiassé Sall and his wife had just moved into a new apartment in Mezzani, in the province of Parma. The apartment did not yet have central heating. To protect themselves from the cold night, the couple lit a charcoal brazier. The carbon monoxide released by the combustion spread throughout the apartment, causing the occupants to asphyxiate while they slept.
Their 7-month-old baby, airlifted in critical condition, was placed on a ventilator. Despite the efforts of the medical staff and four days of fighting for her life in intensive care, she sadly did not survive. The sole survivor of this tragedy, their 14-year-old son, who also witnessed the events, was saved.
But beyond the circumstances of the tragedy, the grieving father remains deeply affected by his last exchanges with his son. A week before his death, Ndiassé, who fervently presided over the local Mouride brotherhood and participated in organizing major religious gatherings for the Senegalese community between Reggio Emilia and Modena, had sent him lists of surahs to recite, while also recommending that he increase his prayers and nafilas. "It was, in reality, his last parting gift," confides Madiagne Sall, still shaken by the memory.
A former emigrant who returned to Senegal after bringing his children to Italy through family reunification in 2010, Madiagne Sall says he is leaving it to fate. While awaiting authorization from Italian authorities for the repatriation of the three bodies to Louga, the patriarch expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of solidarity and the exceptional support of the Senegalese community in Italy, which is standing by the family during this difficult time.
