A chilling story once again illustrates the dangers and violence to which migrants are exposed during clandestine crossings to the Canary Islands.
According to Enrique Espinosa, head of the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, a two-year-old child was thrown into the sea while on board a boat with his mother. The little boy was pushed into the water by the smugglers, who were exasperated by his crying.
The account was given on Thursday, September 24, during an interview on the local radio station Crónicas de Lanzarote. "In a boat, they threw a two-year-old child, who was crying with his mother, into the water," reported the head of the rescue operation. It was announced that the pirogue had departed from The Gambia, bound for the Canary Islands.
The child's fate has not been specified in the available information. Enrique Espinosa mentioned the child's case when questioned about the sexual assault of a woman during a canoe trip, for which three men were arrested and placed in pretrial detention by the Spanish police.
