Exploitation minière : l’iniquité dans la répartition des retombées dénoncée
Mining has a particularly heavy impact on women, according to Léon Michel Huchard, Oxfam's executive director in Senegal. He calls for greater consideration of women in the redistribution of mining revenues.
“Mining has negative consequences for women. That is why we are doing everything we can to ensure that at least 30% of the Local Development Support Fund allocated to communities is allocated to women and girls,” said Mr. Huchard, at the national workshop on connecting and building the capacity of women in mining regions, organized from September 23 to 25, 2026, in Thiès.
He believes this measure will allow women to benefit more from the economic spin-offs generated by mining in their region. "In Senegal, women benefit very little from the spin-offs of mining resources. They are almost forgotten," he laments.
According to Mr. Huchard, women are among the populations most exposed to the negative effects of natural resource exploitation, particularly in economic and health terms.
