Guédiawaye : La BR de Keur Massar démantèle le réseau d'escrocs qui usurpait l'identité de Serigne Abdou Diop Khass et d'autres célèbres marabouts
The Keur Massar Criminal Investigation Brigade (BR) has dismantled a suspected network of fraudsters who were impersonating famous marabouts to scam internet users. According to Seneweb sources, three suspects were arrested in Guédiawaye, one of whom presented himself as a marabout.
The first suspect is MM Sèye, a 30-year-old cook residing in Hamo 6, Guédiawaye. The second is AB Mbaye, a 25-year-old vendor also residing in Guédiawaye. The third is SMA Ndiaye, a 29-year-old self-proclaimed marabout who also lives in Guédiawaye.
The three men are accused of forming an association to commit crimes. They allegedly first created fake profiles on social networks, generally using those of famous marabouts, notably Serigne Fallou Ndiaye Rakhmane, Abdoulaye Diop Khass and Mamadou Niass (Sultan cabinet).
They then allegedly tried to exploit the credulity of internet users to extort money from them, under the guise of rituals, clairvoyance, and spiritual healing. They sometimes promised to solve all ills.
Deceptive videos, which went viral on social media, led internet users to believe that they were dealing with the celebrities whose identities were being stolen.
To collect the money, the scammers provided phone numbers to which victims sent funds directly, believing they were contacting the correct person. The sums thus obtained were relatively modest, between 10,000 and 15,000 CFA francs, which might suggest a simple scam. However, through the use of occult forces, the suspects also managed to blind their victims, who then used tree bark, roots, and trunks that were dangerous to their health.
Complaints and referral to the public prosecutor's office
Several victims have filed complaints. The marabouts whose identities were stolen—Abdoulaye Diop Khass, Serigne Fallou Ndiaye Rakhmane, and Mamadou Niass—have done the same. The public prosecutor's office issued a referral, on the basis of which the investigators acted.
The investigators then focused on the phone numbers and money transfer accounts used by the scammers. This led the gendarmes to arrest Mr. Sèye in Guédiawaye, as he was delivering roots and bark to a victim suffering from sexual weakness.
Caught red-handed, the suspect chose to cooperate. This cooperation led to the arrest of the two other members of the gang. They were found in possession of phones, SIM cards implicated in the crime, and purported magical items.
All the suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday. They are being prosecuted for conspiracy, online fraud involving multiple victims, identity and official impersonation, endangering the lives of others, and quackery. The seized devices will be handed over to the gendarmerie's cybercrime unit for analysis. Prosecutor Saliou Dicko has been informed of the facts.
