Infertilité, faux remède et plus de 3 millions F CFA soutirés : Un « tradipraticien » sur TikTok tombe dans les filets de la police à Mbour
A 23-year-old man, claiming to be a traditional healer, was arrested by investigators from the central police station in Mbour for alleged fraud and quackery. He is accused of swindling a 46-year-old merchant out of 3,230,000 CFA francs by promising to cure his infertility.
The story begins on TikTok . Desperate to conceive after several years of marriage, Mr. Fall discovered a video on the platform featuring Mr. Mbaye, originally from Diourbel. Mr. Mbaye presented himself as the representative in Mbour of a renowned traditional healer based in Touba. In his posts, he touted the supposed benefits of a product claimed to be effective against male infertility. Intrigued by this promise, Mr. Fall sought his services.
A remedy that is not a remedy
According to the investigation, the product presented as a traditional remedy is simply pumpkin powder, with a market value of approximately 1,000 CFA francs. Two sachets were allegedly sold to the victim for 105,000 CFA francs each, totaling 210,000 CFA francs for both, according to Seneweb sources. Believing he had found a solution to his problem, Mr. Fall continued the treatment.
The next day, Mr. Mbaye reportedly informed him that the "great marabout" was demanding 500,000 CFA francs for the complete treatment. Without hesitation, Mr. Fall reached into his pocket.
A few days later, another request arrived: 950,000 CFA francs. This time, Mr. Mbaye promised to create talismans on each bill, for baths using the money thus "treated." Again, Mr. Fall paid the requested sum.
Not stopping there, Mr. Mbaye reportedly explained to his pigeon that after "consulting the stars," he had realized that things were "intertwined" and that a sacrifice was necessary. He then allegedly demanded 530,000 CFA francs for the purchase of an ox for the sacrifice. Mr. Fall made the payment, but never saw the promised animal.
It was the last request that aroused the victim's suspicions. Mr. Mbaye allegedly asked him to prepare 2,950,000 CFA francs, to be handed over upon delivery of the animal. It was at this point that Mr. Fall began to realize he might be the victim of a scam. His doubts intensified when he could no longer reach his contact by phone.
Distraught, the shopkeeper went to the central police station in Mbour to file a complaint. Detectives, under the direction of Police Commissioner Bakary Gningue, head of the judicial division, and under the supervision of Chief Superintendent Bara Niang, launched an investigation. The suspect was located , arrested, and taken to the police station.
During questioning, Mr. Mbaye reportedly admitted to taking advantage of his victim's naivety to defraud him . Following the proceedings, he was brought before the public prosecutor at the Mbour High Court, Augustin Yakhar Faye.
Several items found during the investigation were placed under seal: two gourds, a white shroud, an envelope, two packets of glue, a packet of needles, a bottle of "Zam-Zam" water, four packets of pumpkin powder and a bottle containing roots.
