Migration irrégulière : 167 migrants, dont des Sénégalais, secourus à El Hierro après huit jours en mer
A new migrant rescue took place off the coast of El Hierro, in the Canary Islands. A total of 167 people were rescued last night and brought safely to the port of La Restinga, after spending eight days at sea aboard a wooden boat.
The canoe was spotted south of El Hierro by the Helimer 204 search and rescue helicopter. The Salvamar Navia rescue ship then took over to escort the vessel to port.
Upon their arrival at around 9:15 p.m., the migrants were taken care of by rescue teams and security services, including the Red Cross, the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), the Civil Guard, the National Police and the port services.

Among the 167 migrants are 18 minors. Three people, whose condition required more intensive care, were evacuated to the Nuestra Señora de los Reyes hospital.
According to testimonies gathered from passengers, the pirogue had left Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, before stopping in Tanji, Gambia. The journey to the Canary Islands thus lasted eight days.
The migrants come from several West African countries, including Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Guinea-Conakry, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone.
