Nioro du Rip : une prévalence de l'hépatite B jugée inquiétante par le district sanitaire
The prevalence of hepatitis B has reached 10% in the Nioro du Rip department, a particularly worrying level of endemicity. This was the observation made by the chief medical officer of the health district, Dr. Ousseynou Cissé, during a blood donation and awareness day organized in the locality.
According to the doctor, the disease is endemic in the department, although the situation varies depending on age group. The highest infection rates are recorded in populations born before the introduction of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Conversely, a significant decrease is observed in younger generations who have benefited from routine vaccination.
Given that the Nioro department borders The Gambia, Dr. Cissé emphasized the need for pooling efforts and close collaboration between healthcare professionals in both countries. Harmonizing actions and strengthening the coordination of health programs on both sides of the border appear essential to eradicating the disease.
Furthermore, the chief medical officer made a plea for strengthening the local technical infrastructure, particularly regarding tools for patient care and monitoring. "At the departmental level, viral load testing is not available, and we are currently facing supply difficulties with Tenofovir, the reference antiviral drug ," he explained.
