Pikine : Les populations battent le macadam pour réclamer la libération du maire de Djidah Thiaroye Kao, Mamadou Guèye
Anger is rising among supporters of Mayor Djidah Thiaroye Kao. This Saturday, several residents of the commune took to the streets of Pikine to demand the release of their mayor, who has been detained for several months in connection with a land dispute related to the period when he served as Director of State Lands.
Waving placards and chanting slogans in support of their mayor, the demonstrators wanted to make their voices heard and draw the authorities' attention to the legal situation of the man who leads their town. For them, this mobilization is a way to denounce what they consider a lengthy detention and to demand that the case be expedited.
Indeed, the protesters are raising the issue of the treatment afforded to the various protagonists in the case. They believe that all individuals named or implicated in the case should be treated according to the same rules, without distinction.
Among the protesters, some denounce what they consider to be unequal treatment in the legal proceedings. They call on the relevant authorities to guarantee fairness.
The political dimension also became a factor in the demonstration. Several participants argued that the mayor's political affiliation could partly explain his legal situation.
This case is all the more incomprehensible to his supporters because, according to those close to him, the mayor had been granted provisional release before the prosecutor's office appealed. They believe that the continued detention of their mayor, several months after his initial arrest warrant, now warrants explanation and, above all, a change in the legal proceedings.
