Pikine : l’incroyable histoire de la jeune femme enceinte de jumelles, qui accouche dans la rue puis dans un bâtiment abandonné
On October 8th, a restaurant owner in Pikine Sotiba alerted the police after discovering, around 9 a.m., a plastic bag containing a newborn baby abandoned on her stall. Investigators went to the scene, but the infant had already been taken by a local doctor to the Safia Service Santé private clinic. There, the on-duty nurse, quoted by Libération, confirmed the baby's death to the police, explaining that he had "tried to resuscitate the newborn, but it had already died." The body was then transferred to the Baye Talla Diop health center.
Later that same day, around 11 a.m., the same source continued, a young woman was caught giving birth in the toilets of an abandoned building near the clinic. She received emergency care and her baby was saved.
When questioned by investigators, 22-year-old Sophie N. admitted to being the mother of the two newborns. She explained that she experienced violent contractions on her way to work and gave birth the first time in the street. Believing the child was stillborn, she placed it in a bag before leaving it on the stall. Further pain then forced her to take refuge in the abandoned building, where she gave birth a second time.
The young woman claims she was unaware she was expecting twins and had not attended any prenatal appointments. She also allegedly concealed this unwanted pregnancy from those around her. Hospitalized under police guard, she is the subject of proceedings referred to the Pikine-Guédiawaye prosecutor's office. Libération adds that an autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death of the first newborn.
