Préparation de la grève générale du FSDT : La coordination des secrétaires généraux des centrales en tournée à Thiès
The Trade Union Front for the Defense of Labor (CNTS - UNSAS - CNTS/FC - CSA - UDTS - CNTS/FCA - FGTS/A - CDSL - UTS - FES/PUSDS) has launched a new action plan, the first step of which was to mobilize all workers across Senegal's 14 regions. The FSDT's general secretaries themselves went into the field to hold public conferences as part of the preparations for the general strike planned for October 21, 22, and 23, 2026, in Senegal.
It was in this context that a delegation from the coordination of general secretaries of the trade union federations, led by Élimane Diouf, general secretary of the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Senegal (CSA), participated in a general assembly of workers in Thiès. "The objective of this tour of public conferences in the regions is to inform workers, exchange with union members, and explain the issues at stake in the current social situation," he stated.
This approach is part of a continuation of a mobilization and dialogue process initiated several months ago between trade union organizations and the Government.
From the first notice to the signing of the Pact
Faced with a growing number of workers' concerns (purchasing power, working conditions, trade union freedoms, job security, social protection, and the implementation of agreements), the trade unions filed an initial strike notice. The ensuing discussions led to a framework for negotiation and the signing of the National Pact for Stability and Economic Emergence.
For the trade union movement, this Pact was intended to consolidate social dialogue and provide concrete and progressive responses to workers' demands.
The evaluation of the Pact and the second notice
The evaluation of the Pact's implementation plan, however, revealed insufficient results in light of the commitments made. Despite some progress, the Front noted the persistence of difficulties, particularly concerning trade union freedoms, the dismissal of workers and union officials, the application of sectoral agreements, purchasing power, working conditions, employment, and social protection.
This situation led to the filing of a second strike notice, marking a new stage in the mobilization, after all possibilities for resolving several demands through existing mechanisms had been exhausted. Regarding the reform of the Labor Code and the Social Security Code, the FSDT states that it does not oppose the principle of adapting social legislation, but believes that these reforms must be developed through genuine and in-depth consultation with the trade unions.
The reasons for the current standoff
The unions that are members of the Front state that the current situation stems from the convergence of two major concerns: the insufficient implementation of social commitments and the contested handling of the reform of the two Labor Codes. The Front believes it has thus far prioritized consultation and dialogue. However, it also considers that defending workers' rights now requires stronger mobilization.
The new action plan
It is in this spirit that the Front has adopted a new action plan including: “general assemblies in the regions; a national march; a 72-hour general strike on October 21, 22, and 23, 2026, across the entire national territory.” This tour constitutes the first step in this new phase. The regional assemblies and conferences are intended to explain the current issues to workers, gather their concerns, and strengthen unity and grassroots mobilization.
In unity, responsibility, and determination, the FSDT declares its resolve to continue the mobilization until the legitimate demands of workers are met. It reiterates that its struggle is for the defense of work, trade union freedoms, social protection, and respect for commitments made to workers. It also calls on workers to remain mobilized and determined in defending their rights, while reaffirming that the door to dialogue remains open as long as it yields concrete solutions.
