By donating a contribution of one hundred million CFA francs (100,000,000) this Saturday, September 12, 2026, for the reconstruction of the Zawiya El Hadj Malick Sy in Dakar, the Dakar-Plateau municipality clarifies that it is not simply contributing to the restoration of a building. According to Mayor Alioune Ndoye, this gesture aims to participate in the preservation of a heritage, the transmission of an enlightened faith, the strengthening of our religious and national fraternity, and the future of a Senegal that remembers its masters, honors its guides, and moves forward in the light of its values.
For the mayor of Dakar-Plateau, “the reconstruction of this Zawiya cannot be considered a mere architectural project. Rebuilding this Zawiya means restoring a house of God; but it also means preserving a major spiritual and historical heritage of the Senegalese nation. It means ensuring that, tomorrow, in the heart of Dakar, future generations can come to drink from a source of wisdom, learn the demands of faith, hear the call to peace, and find a space for spiritual growth.”
Rebuilding this Zawiya, the mayor said, is "an act of remembrance. But it is also an act of building for the future. It is to transmit to the children of this country the idea that a civilization is recognized by the way it protects its places of meaning. It is to tell our youth that modernity does not command forgetting; on the contrary, it demands that we know how to move forward without breaking the thread of what has shaped us."
This, Mr. Ndoye continued, is to finally acknowledge that Dakar-Plateau, the administrative, economic, and institutional capital of our country, is also a land of spirituality and dialogue where religious heritage fully contributes to the city's grandeur. The mayor reiterated that the Dakar-Plateau municipality, beyond its administrative missions and responsibilities for planning, urban development, and public services, intends to remain attentive to values, traditions, and heritage.

“We know that a city’s development isn’t just about building infrastructure.
