Témoignage choc : «Je me prostitue parce que mon père m’avait coupé les…»
The public's ears must have been burning. In the dock of the Diourbel court this Wednesday, five young defendants made explosive confessions regarding the crimes for which they were being tried. They were F. Thiam and Nd. Y. Sylla, the two girls in the group, and F. Diouf, AK Fall, and MT Diop.
The first two women were prosecuted for failing to produce health records, and for possession and use of drugs. The trio of young men, on the other hand, were charged with pimping, complicity in this crime, and possession and use of drugs.
F. Thiam was the first to speak out. The affair broke last July after her father, Mr. Thiam, an emigrant based in Italy, noticed during a trip to Senegal that his daughter was behaving strangely. She was regularly absent from the family home without providing any explanation to her parents. The final straw: on one occasion, she stayed out three nights in a row, claiming to have slept at a friend's house during that time.
Suspecting his child of involvement in illegal activities, Mr. Thiam took her to the central police station in Diourbel. During her interrogation, F. Thiam confessed to using ecstasy and identified her friend Nd. Y. Sylla as her supplier.
According to the account in L'Observateur, which attended the trial, she was arrested and forced to confess. "During their interrogation," the newspaper reports, "the two young women's phones kept ringing. Investigators then discovered that F. Thiam and Nd. Y. Sylla were active members of a gang of young people involved in prostitution, pimping, and drug use."
By tracing the outgoing and incoming calls of those involved, investigators traced them back to F. Diouf, AK Fall and MT Diop, who were arrested, brought before the prosecutor and charged.
The five suspects, who had been granted provisional release, appeared in court as free men. Before the judge, F. Thiam partially admitted to the charges, while also claiming mitigating circumstances. "It's because of my father that I'm here today," she argued. "Only a tiny part of what I'm accused of is true. I've never sold drugs. It's true that I prostitute myself. But that's to meet certain material needs because my father had cut me off financially. Also, I've taken drugs with my friends, but I've never sold them."
Going further, according to L'Observateur's report, F. Thiam specified that her clients paid between 10,000 and 15,000 CFA francs per encounter, "without any obligation to use a condom." The young woman was quick to announce that she had stopped prostituting herself.
Nd. Y. Sylla, unlike her co-defendant, denied engaging in prostitution. "I'm not a prostitute and I've never been a pimp," she firmly rejected. "But I'm not going to lie in court and say I don't do drugs. I used to take ecstasy with my friends here. After everything I've been through, that's all over for me now."
Then it was F. Diouf's turn. He, L'Observateur noted, also surprised everyone with his confession: "I have nothing to do with prostitution, much less with pimping. But it is true that I was the one who brought the ecstasy back from Dakar for our use. A friend supplied it to me free of charge. I wasn't aware of the seriousness of what I was doing."
"Finally, AK Fall swears he only participated once in the drug consumption sessions while MT Diop maintains he only transported the two young girls without suspecting their activities," reports L'Observateur.
The newspaper of the Future Media Group reports that MT Diop will be "simply acquitted," while the others were sentenced to one month in prison. F. Thiam, who must also pay a fine of 25,000 CFA francs, was found guilty of failing to possess a health card, and of drug possession and use; Nd. Y. Sylla, F. Diouf, and AK Fall were found guilty of drug possession and use.
