Ziguinchor : le Préfet dit non à la marche du collectif « L’Heure est Grave pour la Casamance »
The Prefect of Ziguinchor, Latyr Diaye, has refused permission for the peaceful march that the citizens' collective "The Situation is Serious for Casamance" planned to organize tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, September 26, 2026. The initiative aimed to denounce the delays in starting construction of the new Émile Badiane bridge, an infrastructure deemed essential for opening up the region.
In an official letter addressed to the president of the collective, El Hadji Mamadou Kamara, the representative of the State welcomes the civic engagement but recalls that the chosen date coincides with the commemoration of the sinking of the Le Joola boat, which occurred on September 26, 2002. This national tragedy mobilizes authorities, bereaved families and security forces every year for a day of remembrance and prayers.
The Prefect has thus invited the organizers to "show patriotism and understanding" by postponing their march to a later date. This decision, which suspends the planned mobilization, reignites the debate on freedom of assembly and the management of citizen movements in the region. The group now faces a dilemma: maintain pressure by quickly rescheduling their march or wait for a more opportune moment. In any case, the standoff over the Émile Badiane bridge remains a central local concern.
