Ziguinchor-Marche interdite : le collectif « L’Heure est grave pour la Casamance » respecte la décision du Préfet
The citizens' march announced by the collective "The Hour is Grave for Casamance" will not take place this Saturday, September 26, in Ziguinchor. Its president, El Hadj Mamadou Kamara, and its members have decided to comply with the decision of Prefect Latyr Diaye, who banned the demonstration due to the commemoration of the sinking of the ferry Le Joola.
In a letter dated September 23, the prefect reminded everyone that this day is dedicated to remembering the thousands of victims of the 2002 maritime disaster. He emphasized that it is a time for reflection, prayer, and national solidarity, mobilizing authorities, bereaved families, and defense and security forces. "A day of remembrance that cannot be disrupted by any other mobilization, however legitimate it may be," he insisted in his letter.
The group, which intended to protest the perceived delays in starting construction of the new Émile Badiane bridge, acknowledged the ban. Its leaders stated they understand the administrative authority's position and welcomed the reminder of the duty to remember. "We respect the prefect's decision and join in prayers for the souls of those lost on the Joola," declared El Hadj Kamara, reaffirming the movement's solidarity with the victims' families.
However, the group maintains its concerns regarding the Émile Badiane bridge, considered a strategic project for opening up and developing the Casamance region. Members of "L'Heure est grave" (The Hour is Grave) assure that they will reschedule their peaceful march for a later date, after the day of commemoration.
This decision illustrates the group's desire to combine civic engagement with respect for national symbols. It highlights the tension between the need to address local emergencies, such as infrastructure, and the imperative to preserve the collective memory of a tragedy that remains etched in the national consciousness.
