MLS : Messi inscrit son 75e coup franc et se rapproche du record de Juninho
At 39, Lionel Messi continues to rack up incredible statistics and add to his already immense legend. The Argentinian striker for Inter Miami once again shone with a free kick during the 2-2 draw against San Diego on Sunday night in Major League Soccer.
Against San Diego, Messi once again demonstrated his exceptional precision in this area, which he has mastered to perfection. His free kick brings his career total to 75 goals scored from direct set pieces.
This performance brings him a step closer to the record held by another world-renowned free-kick specialist: Juninho Pernambucano. The former Brazilian midfielder for Olympique Lyonnais has scored 77 free-kick goals, according to statistics reported by Stats Foot.
Now trailing by just two goals, Messi can legitimately aim to catch and then surpass the Brazilian. At his current pace, the Argentinian could even seize the record before the end of his career.
A new chapter could soon be written in the history of football. After accumulating trophies and records for more than two decades at the highest level, Messi continues to push the boundaries, this time once again on the pitches of MLS.
