Mondial 2026 : « Je ne m'y attarderai pas, même si j'estime que la FIFA a fait preuve d'une certaine complaisance » (Sonko)
In an interview with Al Jazeera English, published yesterday, the president of the National Assembly, and also leader of Pastef/Les Patriotes, Ousmane Sonko, spoke about African participation in the 2026 World Cup. "Regarding Africa's participation in this competition, we must welcome the increase in the number of African teams. However, it was not a gift given to Africa," he first acknowledged.
According to him, "FIFA decided to expand the tournament and increase the number of participating teams. It is therefore perfectly natural that Africa has more representatives." "This World Cup has also raised many questions. I won't dwell on them, although I believe FIFA has shown a certain degree of leniency," he said.
For Ousmane Sonko, the main lesson of this World Cup lies elsewhere. "What this World Cup has reminded us of above all are our persistent weaknesses in terms of management, team administration, and discipline. It is for these reasons that many African teams, including Senegal, which had the potential to go much further, were eliminated earlier than expected. It's regrettable, but it should prompt us to seriously question ourselves," he stated.
When asked about the level of the teams still in contention, the Pastef leader stated: "I don't think that many of the teams still in contention are necessarily stronger than the African teams."
He concluded: "Ultimately, this is a World Cup, a sporting competition. We must show sportsmanship and recognize that the winning teams deserved their success."
