« On appelle ça l’esclavage des temps modernes » : Rémy Ngono charge l’Argentine après ses matchs contre le Burkina et le Bénin
Argentina faced two African teams in early October: Burkina Faso and Benin. The match against the Stallions took place on October 4th and resulted in a resounding 7-0 victory for the Albiceleste. This defeat for the African team can be attributed to several organizational shortcomings.
Captain Traoré's revelations
The team, which was scheduled to leave Casablanca for Buenos Aires on a charter flight on Wednesday, September 30, had its flight canceled at the last minute without prior notice from the charter company. Finally, on the evening of Friday, October 2, the Stallions took a special flight to Buenos Aires.
Most of the players who made the trip were members of the U23 selection. Several key players from the A team simply refused to board the plane which landed in Buenos Aires on the afternoon of Saturday, October 3, a few hours before the start of the match.
The Stallions therefore did not have time to recover from the journey before playing the match.
The President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, would later say that it was he who had hastily put the players of the U23 selection on board Air Burkina to join Morocco where the special flight that allowed them to reach Buenos Aires was waiting for them.
"It is the President of the Republic who is taking 400,000 euros from the state coffers to send the Stallions on their trip."
Rémy Ngono, the renowned pundit for Radio Foot International, was far from pleased with the events surrounding the Stallions' trip. He didn't hesitate to launch a tirade against the Argentinians.
“You can’t invite someone to your home and treat them like that… When I realize that Burkina Faso is a poor and indebted country, you decide to invite Burkina Faso, and it’s the President of the Republic who takes 400,000 euros from the state coffers to send the Stallions, and as a result, it’s the U23 team that ends up there in Argentina. The guys arrive 3 hours before the match and they play like that. I don’t want to mince words: we call that modern-day slavery,” the Cameroonian sports commentator charged.
"You give them a hostel for a few wild animals."
He also noted that Burkina Faso received none of the match proceeds.
Regarding the match against Benin, Rémy Ngono points out the less than enviable conditions in which the Cheetahs stayed in Buenos Aires.
“Benin honors you by coming to play against you, and you give them a place for a few wild animals, because there wasn’t even hot water (there). In any hotel, even in Africa, there’s hot water. Also, at the end of the match, the Beninese players didn’t even have access to the corridors, they had access to practically nothing. It was utter contempt,” fumed the renowned Radio Foot Internationale pundit, referring to “slave-like behavior.”
