Twenty-four hours before their opening match in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) qualifiers, the Lions of Senegal are preparing to embark on a new era. Facing Mozambique this Friday at the Maputo National Stadium, the national team approaches this crucial away game with a new face at the helm, but with undiminished ambition. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, coach Patrick Vieira and defender Moussa Niakhaté displayed unwavering determination, while also urging seriousness and caution against a particularly tough opponent on their home turf.

A favorite status rejected and a trust placed in young people

In his first official minutes on the Lions' bench, the French coach refused to hide behind the prestige of Senegal's ranking. "Being a favorite is a term that people on the outside generally use. Personally, it's not a word I particularly appreciate or like to use," the national team manager stated from the outset. Facing a Mozambican side known for its tactical discipline, the coach promised a pragmatic approach: "We must demonstrate our qualities with a great deal of humility, seriousness, and concentration to overcome this team."

Deprived of his playmaker Sadio Mané, injured and unavailable for this international break, the manager intends to turn this logistical constraint into an opportunity for the next generation. While he is full of praise for the star striker — "an exemplary player, one of the greatest players and a true role model for youngsters" — Patrick Vieira is resolutely focused on the depth of his squad: "We have other players, including young talents who have a lot of quality and a real desire to perform at this level. It will be up to them to seize this opportunity and show what they are capable of."

"We took a beating, but that's in the past."

Alongside him, central defender Moussa Niakhaté spoke frankly about the recent World Cup disappointment. Acknowledging the past failure to better focus on the upcoming Maputo tournament, the senior player delivered a candid speech: “We assessed the situation, and it was a failure. We've always grown, we took a hit, but that's in the past now.” For the Senegalese player, the AFCON qualifiers must mark the starting point of a demanding comeback: “Our goal, as it always has been, is to make the Senegalese people proud. A match is built, and qualification for the AFCON is built.”

Niakhaté also dismissed concerns surrounding the team's rushed preparation, disrupted by the staggered arrival of the international players: "We only had our first real group training session yesterday. So everything is happening in a bit of a hurry. But we have no excuses and tomorrow we will be ready for this match."

A breath of fresh air and a responsibility taken on

Despite the short timeframe, a strong chemistry already seems to be developing between the players and the new coaching staff. Moussa Niakhaté emphasizes the general enthusiasm instilled by the incoming team: "They bring a breath of fresh air, a wealth of ideas, and a lot of energy [...]. It's very easy to work with this staff, who speak the same football language as us. I'm convinced we're going to achieve great things together because we speak the same language and, above all, we share the same goals."

Aware of the expectations of the Senegalese public at the start of this African campaign, Patrick Vieira concluded his remarks with a solemn promise to the fans: “We are aware of our responsibility. On the pitch, we will play with pride and determination to give the nation what it deserves.” Actions must now prevail over words on the Maputo pitch to get the race for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations off to a perfect start.
