Retraite internationale d’Edouard Mendy : « Il va laisser un grand vide », assure Dr Mohamed Ghandour
Edouard Mendy is leaving the Senegal national team. The iconic goalkeeper of the 2025 African champions has decided to retire from international football. Interviewed by TV5Monde, RTS sports commentator Dr. Mohamed Ghandour paid tribute to the Montivilliers native.
"Edouard Mendy embodies perseverance and composure. He's a locker room leader."
For him, the man possessed enormous qualities. "Edouard wasn't the one who wore the captain's armband, but Edouard was a captain. Edouard is truly the pillar of this Senegalese national team…"
Edouard Mendy represents perseverance and serenity. He is a leader in the locker room, and even a leader on the pitch... He will leave a huge void,” said the consultant, convinced that Mr. Mendy would have helped his team get through the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, if he had not injured his knee during the Norway-Senegal match.
“Without wanting to criticize the goalkeeper who replaced him, I still maintain that if it had been Edouard in goal, I don’t think we would have won that match (against Belgium), but in any case, we wouldn’t have conceded that goal which was fatal to this Senegal team. This is to show a little bit the importance of this player’s leadership,” said Dr. Ghandour.
He regrets the departure of the guardian of the den, but strives to understand what could have motivated his choice.
"There's even a kind of ingratitude towards everything they've done."
“We are at a pivotal moment for this Senegalese national team. We are coming off a fiasco at the World Cup, and everything that is being said and done around this team may have indirectly influenced some decisions made by certain players. The arrival of a new coach means a change of direction. We need to wipe the slate clean, we need fresh blood and all that. I think we sent the wrong message to these players; I would even say there is a kind of ingratitude towards everything they have done,” Dr. Ghandour judged.
For him, it would not be at all surprising if other Lions decided to follow in Edouard Mendy's footsteps.
