Steven Gerrard sur l’affaire Manchester City: « Il faut les faire souffrir comme ils ont fait souffrir tout le monde»
Steven Gerrard has raised his voice regarding Manchester City. Appearing on the Overlap Daily program , the former Liverpool captain argued for severe and lasting sanctions against the Citizens. He believes that simply relegating them to the Championship or stripping them of their titles would not be a sufficient response to the allegations against the Manchester club.
A former Reds player between 1998 and 2015, Steven Gerrard is not just an ordinary observer of this situation. The former midfielder notably witnessed Liverpool's failure to win the Premier League title in 2014, at the end of a season marked by his infamous slip against Chelsea. This episode remains associated with losing the championship to Manchester City.
However, Gerrard rejects the idea of retroactively receiving the trophy should City be sanctioned. "I'm not the type to accept taking their Premier League medal," he declared. The former England international maintains he has accepted never having won the league title with Liverpool, despite the painful circumstances of this season.
Beyond the issue of titles, Steven Gerrard does not believe that relegating Manchester City to the English second division would be a punishment commensurate with the alleged offenses. In his view, the club's financial and sporting strength would allow it to quickly return to the top flight.
It was on the nature of the sanctions that Steven Gerrard was most categorical. The former midfielder is calling for "multi-year" and "severe" measures, which he considers necessary to preserve the fairness of the competition and send a strong message to other clubs.
Among the sanctions he advocates are a transfer ban and points deductions applied over several seasons. This, he believes, is a way to prevent Manchester City from quickly regaining its dominant position without lasting consequences.
"I think there needs to be a recruitment ban. I think there needs to be penalty points over a given period. And make them suffer like they made everyone else suffer during the nine or ten years they abused their power. That's my opinion. But we have to set an example," he stated.
🚨🚨 “THEY NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE MEMORIES THEY POTENTIALLY STOLE FROM OTHERS.” 🙌😤 Steven Gerrard 🏴 on Manchester City 👇: 🗣️ “I’m not someone who’s going to say I’d accept a Premier League medal or that I want the one they have. I’ve accepted the fact that I’ve NEVER won the Premier League. (…) I’ve accepted the incident that happened to me at the end of that season. I’ve heard a lot of City players, a lot of City fans, and famous fans say, ‘You can’t take those moments away from us.’” But what about the MEMORIES they've taken away, not just maybe from me and the team I played for, but during that nine or ten-year period? From the fans of Tottenham, United, Everton, the bottom teams, the cup teams. Former City players, current players, owners, and everyone connected with City need to think about the memories they've potentially STOLEN from everyone else. 😳 🎙️ The Overlap Daily https://t.co/RjWHVddf27
