Unai Emery used his press conference yesterday to send a clear message to his players, especially Nicolas Jackson, regarding the management of emotions and discipline on the field.
Emery revisited several recent situations, including the red card received by João Gomes in Brighton and the yellow card given to Nicolas Jackson against Nottingham Forest.
“Mentality encompasses many things; it’s a very important aspect. One of these things is the individual control of emotions. We analyzed João Gomes’ red card received in Brighton as well as Jackson’s yellow card against Forest. We need to learn to control ourselves,” explained the Spanish coach.
The Aston Villa manager then stressed the need to respect referees and opponents, while avoiding reactions that could distract the team.
“We must respect the referee and the opponent, while controlling our emotions to limit red cards, but also avoid some unnecessary yellow cards. Last week, Jackson and Wan-Bissaka, two experienced players, should have shown more control,” he said.
