Bras de fer à Thiès-Nord : Les jeunes de Petit-Thialy barricadent leur terrain de foot face aux projets de la mairie
The young people of the Petit-Thialy neighborhood in the municipality of Thiès-Nord are strongly opposed to the proposed construction of a school on the football field they themselves developed. They denounce the decision as being made without consultation and accuse the mayor of trying to impose the project despite their numerous appeals to the authorities.
According to youth spokesperson Jean Baptiste Tendeng, the site in question was formerly an abandoned space, overgrown with weeds and shrubs, which had become a place considered dark and dangerous. He explained that the young people of the neighborhood had mobilized to clean it up and transform it into a football pitch.
He claims that the Thiès-Nord town hall only took an interest in the site after its rehabilitation. Initially, he learned that the municipality had mentioned a project to build a "daral" (a traditional meeting place) and had installed streetlights. Faced with the residents' refusal, these lights were subsequently removed.
Jean Baptiste Tendeng explains that a second project, this time concerning the construction of a school, was presented to them. The young people again opposed it and met with the mayor, who directed them to the regional education authority, the sub-prefecture, and the prefecture, believing that the matter did not fall solely under his jurisdiction.
In their view, the project remained stalled until the approach of the 2027 local elections. Jean Baptiste Tendeng now believes that Mayor Mouhamadou Diakhaté is trying to expedite its completion. He reports that the mayor recently visited the site with a large delegation and law enforcement officers, and says he learned that work is scheduled to begin this Monday.
Faced with this, the young people are showing their determination to prevent the start of construction. "Not a single brick will be laid on this site," they warn, believing that this field is the only sports area in the neighborhood and that it must be preserved.
They are finally calling on the administrative authorities to promote dialogue in order to find a consensual solution, regretting what they describe as the "power play" of the town hall.
