Discipline, respect et réussite scolaire : le pari gagnant du Vovinam à Thiès
In Thiès, the Vovinam Viet Vo Dao Association once again demonstrated that this combat sport is not limited to learning fighting techniques. This was during its ceremony awarding diplomas and belts to 60 practitioners, including 50 children and 10 adults from Thiès, Saint-Louis, Mbour, and Joal. Beyond rewarding their efforts, this event highlighted the human and educational values that underpin this discipline.
For the president of the Vovinam Viet Vo Dao association in Thiès, Master Cheikh Tidiane Mbodj, this discipline is first and foremost a school of life. "Vovinam trains young people technically in combat, but above all morally. It teaches them self-control, good character, vigilance, and prepares them to face the challenges of daily life," he explains.
According to the lawyer, Vietnamese martial arts also emphasize the balance between studies and sports. The association encourages its students, from primary school to university, to pursue their academic studies while also participating in athletic activities. For Master Mbodj, it is entirely possible to excel in both academics and sports, as demonstrated by numerous champions worldwide.
Contrary to popular belief, he emphasizes that Vovinam does not encourage violence. On the contrary, it teaches discipline, respect for others, humility, solidarity, a sense of responsibility, and self-improvement. He affirms that each training session thus becomes a learning experience where practitioners develop both their character and their physical abilities.
Despite its commitment, the association says it faces several difficulties. President Maître Mbodj particularly laments a lack of recognition and obstacles posed by certain organizations. "Our association is legally recognized and works regularly in Thiès. But some organizations want to benefit from advantages that should also belong to us," he regretted.
Master Mbodj also recalled the efforts made to enable the school's instructor, Mouhamed Niang, to obtain his higher ranks abroad, an important investment to ensure quality supervision.
In conclusion, Master Cheikh Tidiane Mbodj appealed to the Ministry of Sports to ensure that the Vovinam Viet Vo Dao Association of Thiès receives better support and the same consideration as other structures operating in this discipline in Senegal.
