Forum BAL Économie et Impact : Wave Sénégal dévoile le potentiel colossal de l'écosystème créatif et sportif africain
Dakar, the world capital of Teranga (hospitality), is a city where trends are born, cultures meet, and innovation meets heritage. It is in this spirit that the African Renaissance Monument was chosen to host the BAL In Dakar Festival. At the crossroads of basketball, music, fashion, and urban trends, this African event, which opened on Saturday, August 22, 2026, highlights the talents, stories, and communities shaping the future of the continent. The official opening ceremony was attended by a representative from the Ministry of Culture, Crafts, and Tourism, as well as key partners of the event, including Wave.
The rise of the sports economy on the continent
Africa is at a pivotal moment: the 2030 World Cup, the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, and the rise of the sports economy on the continent. In six seasons, the Basketball Africa League (BAL) has brought together 39 teams from more than 20 countries, attracted over 110,000 spectators, generated over 1.1 billion views in 214 countries and territories, and gathered a record 22 commercial and institutional partners. This proves that a major pan-African sporting event is now a powerful driver of national influence, as well as economic and human development.
The stakes, the opportunities, the challenges and the prospects
Thus, as part of the BAL in Dakar Festival, the organizers launched the BAL Economy and Impact Forum, which told the story through the voices of the partners involved in this initiative. Wave participated in the first panel, alongside the Senegalese Tourism Promotion Agency (ASPT), represented by its Director General, Mr. Adama Ndiaye, on the theme: "Investing in the Creative and Sporting Ecosystem: Models for Growth and Continental Attractiveness." Discussions focused on the macroeconomic impact of sport and creative industries, strategic investments, digital financial networks, and sports tourism.
During this meeting, which will bring together business leaders, institutional partners, and stakeholders in the Senegalese economic ecosystem, Mr. El Hadji Malick Guèye, CEO of Wave Digital Finance (Wave Senegal), discussed the stakes, opportunities, challenges, benefits, and prospects of investing in the creative and sports ecosystem in Africa. According to him, the African creative and sports ecosystem presents enormous potential that remains largely untapped.
This first edition of the forum was also an opportunity for an announcement on the renovation of basketball courts in Dakar and Abidjan (Ivory Coast) supported by Wave, a strategic partner of the festival.
As a reminder, BAL In Dakar is an exceptional event that brings together sport, music, culture, and entertainment through a rich and varied program. The festivities will include the semi-finals and finals of the Neighborhood Tournament, panels with various partners, a BAL Celebrity Game featuring influencers and professional Senegalese and international basketball players, as well as concerts showcasing several major artists from the Senegalese music scene.
