Malaga-Fulham: Une scène surréaliste qui rappelle la finale de la CAN 2025
The friendly match between Malaga and Fulham (2-2, 1-0 on penalties) on Wednesday will certainly be remembered.
As the two teams headed towards a penalty shootout to decide the winner, a rather surprising situation disrupted the end of the match. Moments before the final whistle, Alvaro Arbeloa, manager of the English team, was sent off by the referee after vehemently protesting.
After seeing their manager forced to leave the pitch, the Fulham players simply decided to follow him to the dressing room. This decision effectively ended their participation in the match, even before the penalty shootout began.
The Andalusians then won the match in a rather comical situation. Eneko Jauregi converted his penalty into an empty net, as the Fulham goalkeeper had also left the pitch.
This end to the match is also reminiscent of the 2025 AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco, which was also marked by a particularly turbulent interruption and the departure of the Senegalese players to the locker room, after strong protests following a penalty awarded to Morocco.
In Malaga, the scenario was obviously very different, and the context had nothing to do with that of an Africa Cup of Nations final. But the image of players leaving the pitch before the end of the match inevitably brings to mind that episode, which had a significant impact on the 2025 AFCON.
