Tivaouane: Stormwater drainage works 60% complete, delivery scheduled for the end of July 2026

Tivaouane : les travaux de drainage des eaux pluviales exécutés à 60 %, livraison prévue fin juillet 2026

During a visit this weekend to the rainwater drainage sites in the city of Tivaouane, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Diéye, declared himself satisfied with the level of execution of the works, which he describes as an "extremely structuring" project for the religious city.

At the end of the visit, the minister emphasized that the project, initially conceived around a 15-kilometer canal intended to serve the city's main districts, had been expanded following consultations with local authorities, stakeholders, and religious leaders. The canal's length was thus increased to 22 kilometers to better meet the needs expressed by the population.

According to him, the work on the two sections, including the outfalls, collectors and the main canal, is currently about 60% complete. This level of progress is considered very encouraging as the rainy season approaches.

"If the current pace is maintained, the work should be completed and delivered by the end of July 2026," he said, adding that he was reassured by the technical quality of the work carried out.

The minister commended the company in charge of the work for meeting deadlines and quality standards. He also congratulated the teams from the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS) for their project management, as well as the Tivaouane town hall and the prefectural services for their ongoing support.

Cheikh Tidiane Diéye also expressed his gratitude to the people of Tivaouane and particularly to Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour for their trust and support.

Beyond the ongoing construction project, the minister unveiled the main guidelines of the new national strategy for integrated flood risk management. This strategy aims to make use of rainwater rather than discharge it, by storing it and using it for productive purposes.

With this in mind, the valleys surrounding Tivaouane will be developed to increase their storage capacity. Retention basins and waterproofing works will be carried out to promote the exploitation of these resources in the horticulture and fish farming sectors.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Office of Lakes and Watercourses and the Ministry of Agriculture, and should be included in the next budget of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation. He describes the project as "extremely structuring" for the religious city, based on the level of work being carried out.
