Yankhoba Diémé raconte les origines de « Serigne Ngoundou » : « J'ai encaissé 2 875 FCFA comme chambellan de Diomaye »
The story surrounding the nickname "Serigne Ngoundou" attributed to the head of state is often told incompletely. In an interview with Seneweb , the Minister of the Armed Forces, Yankhoba Diémé, sought to set the record straight by providing new details: " This story originated with me ," he revealed from the outset.
Before explaining its origins, the minister first shared his feelings about the personality of the President of the Republic: " When you talk with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, you sometimes get the impression that God is whispering in his ear. His serenity in certain situations is beyond comprehension. "
To find the origin of this anecdote and the famous pseudonym, we must go back to July 2017. “ My wife’s aunt had organized a religious ceremony and wanted me to be the godfather. I preferred to give this place to Ousmane Sonko. It was during the legislative election campaign or just after his election, I don’t remember exactly. We were there with Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Birame Souleye Diop and another companion. The sermon was given by a son of the late Ibou Sakho ,” he recounts.
It was during this gathering that a singular scene occurred: “ At one point, the preacher suddenly stopped. His attitude surprised everyone present. He seemed amazed, as if he had just seen something extraordinary in the crowd. After a long silence, he pointed at a person and declared three times: ‘This man will be a great authority in this country,’” the minister continued.
At first, the audience thought of another member of the team: “ Since Birame Souleye Diop was dressed very elegantly, with an almost presidential air, we all naturally turned our eyes towards him. But the preacher insisted: ‘I’m talking about the man with the scarf,’ pointing again to Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He then added that any prayers this man offered for anyone would be answered. ”
Once the ceremony was over, the atmosphere relaxed and gave way to playful banter among the traveling companions: “ I then jokingly proclaimed myself ‘chamberlain of Diomaye,’ since everyone now wanted to receive his prayers. I even ‘cashed in’ 2,875 FCFA, including three 500 FCFA coins, to let people approach him! All the way back, we kept teasing him about it. ”
It was in this atmosphere of camaraderie that the famous nickname emerged: “ If I remember correctly, it was Birame Souleye Diop who gave him the nickname ‘Serigne Ngoundou,’ although I can no longer say this with absolute certainty. However, what I am sure of is that this scene was then recounted several times during our committee meetings, which contributed to popularizing this nickname ,” concluded Yankhoba Diémé.
