Macky, Sonko, Diomaye : à chacun son agenda
Suddenly, the noise started up again with renewed intensity. The wind picked up, and with it, political squabbles reclaimed their place in Senegalese daily life. As if the country could hardly go a few days without a new episode in its endless political soap opera.
Macky Sall, former president of the Republic, has withdrawn his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. A battle that seemed doomed from the start, but whose outcome could have given him a new political impetus, including on the national stage. Twenty-four hours later, Ousmane Sonko breaks his silence. The leader of Pastef raises the threat of blocking the 2027 budget if the government does not engage in "frank and sincere" discussions with the National Assembly, where his party holds a majority.
In the aftermath, officials from Kiiraay, the presidential party, accused Pastef of trying to paralyze the functioning of the state. The stage is set. Accusations fly, positions shift, and everyone seems to be already counting their troops. Macky, Sonko, Diomaye: each has their own agenda.
Behind this uproar, political positions are becoming clearer as the local elections approach, with the possibility of early legislative elections looming in the background should the National Assembly be dissolved. Within the Alliance for the Republic (APR), ambitions for a comeback are becoming more pronounced. Some hope for Macky Sall's return to the country, while signs of rapprochement between the former head of state and his successor, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, are fueling speculation. The President of the Republic had supported his predecessor's candidacy for the UN, granting him diplomatic visibility that did not go unnoticed.
Could this be a game-changer? Perhaps. Could a third way emerge in this landscape dominated by two poles: Ousmane Sonko and his "Patriots" on one side, and Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the "Republican Patriots" on the other? Senegalese politics has never been short of surprises. Yesterday's alliances are not always tomorrow's, and today's support doesn't necessarily guarantee future allegiances.
But while the military strategists are fine-tuning their plans, the Senegalese people have other pressing concerns. During his press conference, Ousmane Sonko announced an upcoming and "inevitable" price increase linked to the removal of certain subsidies. This is a difficult prospect for households already struggling, especially as back-to-school expenses weigh heavily on family budgets.
Even though the government mobilized about ten of its members yesterday to reassure the Senegalese people, the social climate remains tense, with strike calls announced in several sectors. This only adds to the anxiety of citizens, already worried about the cost of living and the uncertainty of the future.
At home, people calculate, they deprive themselves, they try to make ends meet. In the political arena, they also calculate, but the stakes are not the same. Some are thinking about the next elections, others about the next expense.
So, let's hope the rainy season lives up to expectations and that the harvests are good. They could help to mitigate the shock for rural households and ease the pressure on markets.
Because in Senegal, the seasons change, the difficulties persist, and political ambitions never take a break. Macky, Sonko, Diomaye, and even the others: each pursues their own agenda. The people, however, still wait for answers to their concerns. And their bills don't wait.
