Ligue des nations : Israël hausse le ton après les déclarations du sélectionneur irlandais sur le « génocide »
The match between Ireland and Israel will be played in a particularly tense atmosphere. Just days before their Nations League clash, statements by Heimir Hallgrímsson, the Republic of Ireland coach, have provoked a strong reaction from the Israeli Football Association, which is considering taking the matter to UEFA.
When asked during the squad announcement at Abbotstown how to keep his players focused on football in an international context marked by the conflict in the Middle East, the Irish manager did not dodge the question. He stated: "We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel, we are not playing with Israel."
Hallgrímsson also reiterated a position he had already expressed the previous year. He questioned the difference in treatment between Russia, excluded from FIFA and UEFA competitions after its invasion of Ukraine, and Israel, which has not been subject to a comparable measure regarding the situation in Palestine.
These statements come as Ireland and Israel are scheduled to face each other twice in the Nations League. The first match is set for Sunday in Debrecen, Hungary. Israel is forced to play its "home" matches abroad for security reasons.
The Israeli federation is taking a stand.
The Israeli Football Association was quick to react. In a message posted on social media, it strongly condemned the Irish coach's remarks and announced it was considering taking action with UEFA.
The Israeli body notably criticized Hallgrímsson for remarks that it considers to be based on "ignorance" and "hypocrisy", adopting a particularly virulent tone in its own response.
According to several Israeli media outlets cited by "The Irish Times", the Israeli federation is considering filing an official complaint with UEFA against the Irish coach. At this stage, however, no official complaint had been registered with the European body on Monday evening.
The upcoming confrontation between the two teams is therefore expected to be particularly closely followed, with a sporting dimension that risks being overshadowed by the controversy arising from the statements of the Irish coach.
